As part of this year’s festival, the Belarusian opposition activist Maryja Kalesnikawa will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Graz University of Art in absentia. Maryja Kalesnikava has been in prison since 2020, recently it was no longer possible to contact her and her fate is uncertain. Both Amnesty International and the European Parliament have repeatedly called for her unconditional release. Maryja Kalesnikava is a flautist, studied in Stuttgart and has dealt a lot with contemporary music. The honorary doctorate is intended to be a sign that she and her colleagues who are fighting for democracy and freedom in Belarus must not be forgotten. Wolfgang Hattinger, Chairman of the Senate of the Graz University of Art and Design, will report on this at the Ö1 Klassik Treffpunkt.

The ORF music protocol in steirischer herbst has been designed since the beginning as a media festival, the largest “venue” of which is the radio.
