NEW YORK — About 70,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City in the past year, and Mayor Eric Adams said hundreds more arrive every day.
The City and the State have sought alternative shelters to house thousands of migrants, and in the midst of this migratory crisis, organizations and religious centers have begun to use their facilities to house asylum seekers thanks to agreements created with the city.
One of those agreements is with the Muslim Community Center located in Brooklyn, which has already received some 75 migrants. For his part, as reported by CNNthe Big Apple also has other types of contracts such as New York Disaster Interfaith Servicesto provide the same help.
This is not the first time that religious centers or churches in the city have opened their doors to help or shelter migrants in the midst of a crisis.
It was also revealed this weekend that the Lincoln Prison Facility, a former prison in Harlem and a state facility, will temporarily house migrants after Gov. Kathy Hochul gave it permission on Sunday. It is not yet clear when and how they will move, but it is known that families with minors will not be allowed.
Solutions to shelter migrants have generated controversy. Among these is New York’s plan to use school gyms as emergency shelters for migrants, or send them to other counties in the state, where officials in these places issued states of emergency to stop the measure.
