## Interview: New York City’s Water conservation Success Story
**Host:** Welcome back to Archyde News. Today we are joined by Brian Walters, the Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, to discuss the recent lifting of the city’s drought watch. Brian, thank you for being with us.
**Brian Walters:** My pleasure. I’m happy to be here and talk about this encouraging development.
**Host:** New York City went through a period of important water stress earlier this year. Can you remind our viewers about the measures that were put in place, and what led to the decision to lift the drought watch?
**Brian Walters:** Sure. Back in April, we entered a drought watch due to below-average precipitation and concerns about dwindling water reserves. We implemented several measures, including encouraging residents to reduce water usage, restrict outdoor watering, and postponing non-essential repairs on the Delaware aqueduct to ensure maximum water flow. These measures were essential in making sure we had enough water to meet the needs of all New Yorkers.
**Host:** And what ultimately changed the course, allowing for the drought watch to be lifted?
**Brian Walters:** A combination of factors. We experienced a welcome period of rainfall in November and december, which significantly replenished our reservoirs. Citizen collaboration was key. New Yorkers responded positively to our call for conservation, demonstrating notable commitment to saving water. Businesses also adopted water-saving practices. it truly was a city-wide effort.
**Host:** This seems like a textbook example of how individual action can have a significant impact on a city’s environmental challenges.
**Brian Walters:** Absolutely. It highlights the power of collective responsibility. Our residents understand the vital importance of water, and they stepped up when it mattered most.
**Host:** Looking forward, are there lessons learned from this experience that the city can implement for future drought preparedness?
**Brian Walters:** Certainly. This experience has reinforced the need for continued investment in our water infrastructure, ongoing public education regarding water conservation practices, and exploring innovative technologies for managing water resources.
**Host:** Thank you, Brian, for your insights. This is certainly a positive story, demonstrating the resilience and collective spirit of New York City.
**Brian Walters:** Thank you for having me.
