Nvidia has spent $9 billion to secure inventory

Despite the stock problems of the 3000 generation, Nvidia is preparing the launch of its new GeForce RTX 4080 family for 2022. The firm therefore wants to ensure the production of its new components as well as possible.

Shortage of components seems to be calming down, but the graphics card market is still hard hit. We are far from being able to find graphics cards at the recommended price, or even in stock, at merchants. Prices have soared to the point of deterring players from updating their builds. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to wait without renewing your machine or to do it at a lower costand Nvidia seems to be preparing to take over.

According to the HardwareTimes media, Nvidia would be hard at work preparing for the launch of the GeForce RTX 4000 for the start of the 2022 school year.

Securing TSMC production

Specifically, the outlet says Nvidia spent $9 billion last quarter to secure inventory and manufacturing for future products. This figure was “only” 6.9 billion in the previous quarter and 2.54 billion in the same quarter last year. This sum would be used in particular to reserve production work at TSMC on the 5 nm manufacturing process which should be used for the new Ada Lovelace architecture.

This new process allows a performance improvement of 16% at equal consumption compared to 7 nm. In addition to the 9 billion spent, Nvidia might add 1.79 and 1.64 billion over the next two quarters to pay TSMC and 5 nm production capacity. Hopefully this will allow for a higher stock level than for the Ampere launch. Let’s also hope that Nvidia will reserve more production for its excellent Founder Edition cards sold at the recommended price.

The GeForce RTX 4080, 4090 and 4070 graphics cards are not expected before September 2022. The Ada Lovelace architecture should be presented as early as the Nvidia GTC conference scheduled for March 22, 2022. They will have to face AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture , also scheduled for 2022.
