Menstruation is often associated with many unpleasant side effects. Proper nutrition can help the body cope with a difficult period, said nutritionist Lana Belyaeva, writes MedicForum.

She explained that it is better not to include some foods in the diet during menstrual periods. For example, you should exclude fatty meat, which can negatively affect hormones. You should also not overeat fast food – such food increases estrogen levels due to the waste it contains – this can increase pain. It is better to avoid peas and beans, which cause flatulence, as well as cookies. Drinks containing caffeine should also be excluded from the diet – they increase mood swings and headaches, the doctor added. Alcohol and sweet soda have the same effect, she says. Instead, it is better to drink tea.

The doctor added that you can have lunch with fresh vegetables, fruits and light salads. Whole grain products, salmon, oat, almond or soy milk, flaxseed oil or foods containing iron – spinach, cabbage, amaranth, millet, lentils, chickpeas and pumpkin seeds, as well as oranges, lemons or limes – can also ease the discomfort.
