Nurul Akmal Gives Message About Her Appearance Wearing Hijab at 2024 Olympics

Indonesian female weightlifter Nurul Akmal has yet to win a medal at the 2024 Olympics. Competing in the 81 kg weightlifting class, Nurul had to be satisfied with 12th place.

This is the first time the lifter who is familiarly called Amel has appeared in a competition wearing a hijab. She feels proud to be able to represent herself as a Muslim who comes from Aceh.

“This is the first time on stage wearing a hijab. Amel is very proud to be able to wear a hijab here, because Amel is from Aceh, so she wants to show that to everyone. Amel wants to let people know that women who wear the hijab are more appreciated. That Muslim women who wear the hijab can also appear and achieve at the Olympics,” she said.

In the match at South Paris Arena 6, Sunday (11/8), Nurul Akmal completed a total lift of 245 kg. He successfully did a snatch lift of 105 kg but failed in the next two snatch lifts with a load of 110 kg.

In the clean & jerk he successfully lifted 140 kg. In the second attempt Nurul Akmal managed to increase his load to 145 kg but lowered his lift too quickly so he was considered a failure. He also failed again in the third lift with a load of 151 kg.

“Tokyo is very different from Paris. Here there are many spectators and everyone is supportive, whoever plays is supported by them. Today Amel tried her best, she enjoyed playing,” said Amel.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported Amel. There are many lessons to be learned, Amel met world-class opponents. In the future, Amel must be more enthusiastic and better,” he added.

This is her second appearance at the Olympics. In her debut in Tokyo 2020, Nurul Akmal posted a total lift of 256 kg and finished fifth in the 87 kg class.

Chinese lifter Li Wen Wen won the gold medal with a total lift of 309 kg. The silver medal went to Park Hyejeong of South Korea with a total lift of 299 kg. The bronze medal was won by Emily Campbell of England with a total lift of 288 kg. (Z-6)
