Aceh lifter Nurul Akmal was chosen as the torchlighter at the opening ceremony of the 21st Aceh-North Sumatra (Sumut) National Sports Week (PON) 2024. The sporting event, which will be opened by President Jokowi, will be held at the Harapan Bangsa Stadium, Banda Aceh, Monday (9/9) evening.
Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo said that Nurul Akmal, an athlete from Tanah Luas, North Aceh, received the honor thanks to the achievements he had achieved, including appearing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Nurul Akmal has shown extraordinary achievements for Indonesian sports. He has appeared in two Olympics, Tokyo and Paris,” said Dito during a press conference at the Main Media Center of the Aceh region entitled “PON XXI Aceh-Sumut 2024 for Indonesia Juara”. The activity took place at the Hermes Hotel Banda Aceh, Sunday (8/9/2024) night.
Meanwhile, Acting Governor of Aceh Safrizal ZA assessed that Nurul Akmal is the most accomplished athlete that Aceh currently has. “He has made Aceh and Indonesia proud with his achievements, we had offered him a job at a regional banking institution,” said Safrizal.
He also explained that at this PON, Nurul Akmal will continue to defend the Aceh contingent with the target of winning a gold medal, as he did at the XX PON in Papua.
Nurul Akmal, who is usually called Amel, is a female weightlifter from Aceh who started her career in 2010. Some of her important achievements include ranking 12th at the 2018 IWF World Championships in Turkmenistan and winning a bronze medal at the 6th Qatar International Cup Grand Prix 2019 in Doha.
At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she ranked fifth in the +87kg class with a total lift of 256 Kg. Recently, Nurul also appeared at the 2024 Paris Olympics, although she only ranked 12th. (M-3)
