The success rate for the examination of the Order of Nurses of Quebec increased significantly in the fall of 2023, compared to the same period last year.

With a passing score set at 57.7%, the overall success rate is 63%. It even climbs to 69% for candidates who were on a first attempt.

“It’s a step in the right direction, but the success rate, at 63%, remains worrying,” mentioned the national president of the Interprofessional Health Federation (FIQ), Julie Bouchard, in an email exchange with TVA News.

This is, essentially, a return to normal with regard to the management of OIIQ exams.”

Thus, 1,940 new nurses will enter the job market across Quebec, among the 3,080 candidates who took the exam.

“I am very proud. We worked so hard to succeed,” said Alyson Dubé, 20, when she arrived at work Thursday at the Chicoutimi hospital. She passed the exam on her first try.

She and her colleague Catherine Dessureault, 21, were apprehensive, considering everything that had been said regarding this exam in recent years.

“We almost show up backwards, we have the impression that we are going to sink before we begin,” said Ms. Dessureault. But at work, I am well surrounded and I work with complete confidence.”

The two new nurses believe that the exam may not reveal the true abilities of a trainee nurse.

“I know some who failed, but who are super good on the field,” said Alyson Dubé. A score of 60% does not mean the value of a nurse. The exam is complex, with many trick questions. I don’t think that’s what defines us.”

The FIQ is still requesting the recalculation of the results of the September 2022 and March 2023 exams.

The president of the FIQ of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Julie Boivin, went further. “The consequences of previous failures on our young people remain. The Federation will continue its work to seek compensation for the financial and moral damage suffered.”

The OIIQ did not want to comment.
