Distance learning (EaD) is a teaching modality that, although not so current, has gained strength by combining practicality with the possibility for students to adjust their routine more optimally with their other tasks.

Following the trend of previous years, the 13th edition of the Map of Higher Education in Brazil, publication of the Semesp Institute, identified with the expansion of the EaD modality (Distance Education) and the retraction of face-to-face enrollments in 2021.

In 2020, a drop of 9.4% in enrollments was recorded, a rate that passed 5.5% in the year analyzed. Meanwhile, the number of enrollments in the EaD modality increased by 19.7% in the same period.

The publication presents statistics and figures for 2021, when higher education was still suffering the impacts of the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic, with an increase in the number of infected Brazilians and victims in the first half of the year.

André Barbalho, founding partner of Widom – a company that offers online professional qualification courses – points out that EaD in Brazil is growing exponentially, democratizing access to quality education.

“One of the main factors that explain the growth of distance education is the ease of learning”, says Barbalho. “The educational institution must offer an innovative didactics, allowing the student to study at their own schedules and review all the content, either through video lessons and handouts, as many times as necessary, for life”, he adds.

In the entrepreneur’s view, the proximity between students and professors in EaD is an essential factor for the teaching-learning process to occur effectively.

“Students who take professional qualifications at a distance, for example, should be able to clear their doubts with the tutors on a daily basis, and in real time, as this contributes significantly to greater learning and a quicker insertion into the job market”, explains.

By the way, a global study carried out by edtech Anthologyrevealed that regarding 70% of students prefer to receive feedback from teachers on assignments through an online platform.

In addition, more than half (66%) of students in the modality reported that they often or always receive feedback in this way. A search interviewed 2,572 university leaders and 2,725 students, between March and April 2022, in ten countries, including Brazil.

From the perspective of Widom’s founding partner, the job market is promising for distance learning students, offering several opportunities. “In the distance learning modality, students can study at their own schedules and, thus, have more flexibility to work and meet the needs and demands of companies – which, in turn, can boost their careers”, considers Barbalho.
