Number of community service declarations decreased by 9.4 percent

With 5,613 assigned civil servants from January to June inclusive, the demand was met by 89.1 percent. This is 2.1 percent higher than in the same period in 2023, explained Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP), State Secretary for Youth and Civil Service, at a press conference on Thursday.

The decline in community service declarations can be explained by a general decline in conscription and the fact that there are no longer any backlogs from the Corona year 2020. A further increase to around 90 percent of demand is expected by the end of the year. According to Plakolm, 100 percent capacity utilization is not possible due to short-term outages.

The innovations brought regarding by the civil service amendment

In addition to the recent increase in basic pay from EUR 536.10 (2023) to EUR 585.10 (2024), an amendment to the civil service passed by parliament in July also brings some innovations. The change in the law now makes it possible to take action once morest “system evaders” by having the civil service authority commission an examination by a specialist. In addition, civil service will be divisible under certain circumstances. In addition, the daddy month and hourly leave of absence from work (previously only whole days) will be introduced and the preferential allocation will be expanded to include the sectors of elderly care and hospitals.

The areas of deployment for civil servants are very diverse. The three areas with the most assignments are rescue services, with 41.3 percent of assignments, social and disability assistance (24.2 percent) and elderly care (12.4 percent).

Plakolm appeals to young men to sign up for community service. There is a great need for helping hands, especially in the first half of the year.
