Nuki announces the upcoming arrival of new locks, compatible with Matter and Thread

Nuki, Austrian specialist in connected locks, communique on the arrival of Matter within its range. Let’s get rid of the bad news first: current products will be deprived of it, the new home automation standard will be reserved for a new range which should be presented by the end of the year. If you have an old generation lock, it will not benefit from a software update to activate Matter.

The author would like to point out that this photo does not give not an indication of the actual operation of the connected locks sold by the manufacturer (Nuki image).

This may be explained by the choice to adopt Thread, in addition to Matter, in these new versions. Until then, the locks designed by Nuki communicated either via Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi for the Pro 3.0. Thread is a wireless communication protocol tailored for home automation, which has the advantage of consuming much less energy than Wi-Fi, while having a much greater range than Bluetooth. In return, a Thread edge router will be required, but you probably already have one, especially if you have a HomePod or an Apple TV with a recent Ethernet socket.

Thread takes care of the hardware part, Matter of the software. The two should not be confused, even if they are often used together, as Nuki proves once more with its new locks.

All regarding Matter and Thread, the two new home automation standards not to be confused

The manufacturer specifies in passing that an update of Matter will be necessary to operate its connected locks. SwitchBot has however activated Matter for a few weeks for its own connected lock, but Nuki’s products are able to handle openings that unlock with a latch that keeps the door closed even following unlocking the lock. This subtlety was not managed in the Matter protocol and Nuki worked with the CSA which is in charge of it to add it.

This Matter update is expected in the fall and the new Nuki locks will probably be released soon following. We do not yet know the prices to expect for this Thread and Matter generation. We also don’t know if these locks will only be Matter or will remain natively compatible with HomeKit, but the first hypothesis is the most credible, since it will not change anything to benefit from the lock in the Home app and via Siri.
