The 32-year-old striker arrives with the pass in his possession following two years of inactivity, due to the event that occurred on Sunday, September 19, 2021 when, as determined by Justice, he had sexual relations with a woman without her consent and “He took advantage of the fact that he might not resist because he was drunk.”
Escobar was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and the Court ordered his passport to be withheld to prevent him from leaving the country.
The soccer player born in Puerto Tejada pleaded not guilty since the complaint was made public and, although he acknowledged having been with the victim, he denied the abuse and appealed the ruling. However, in September 2022, Justice, in a second instance, ratified the conviction.
The Colombian Association of Professional Soccer Players decided to intervene in the case and reached an agreement with the local judicial authorities, of which the details were not revealed, to allow the player to leave the country before serving his sentence.
Escobar’s words
“Fortunately an agreement was reached and I was able to leave. The case is still open, but there was a settlement for human rights. What they did with me was illegal, they took my passport and left me to die in the street. We ensure human rights with part of the union and players,” Escobar had reported in January 2023, when he returned to Colombia.
Furthermore, downplaying the importance of the sentence, he stated: “The process is still open, but Iceland is not part of the European Union, nor do I have a problem with justice here in Colombia, so that is what leaves me calm. I left a lawyer there, but I don’t give much importance to that because the abuse they committed once morest me was extremely great.”
Escobar’s career
Escobar, who is known to have other cases of indiscipline throughout his career, arrives in Chicago following passing through Deportivo Cali, Dinamo Kiev, Evian Dallas, Atlético Nacional, Millonarios, Vasco da Gama, Estudiantes de La Plata, Deportes Tolima , Liepaja, Alagoano, Cúcuta Deportivo and Leiknir Reykjavík.
In most clubs he terminated before the end of his contract and only in Deportivo Cali, where he was between 2008 and 2011, did he last more than a year.
During his time at Deportes Tolima in 2018, he was fired by the club following arriving at training while intoxicated. That day an image of the Colombian sleeping on one of the stretchers in the infirmary went viral.
