Nuclear extension: no agreement reached, negotiations with Engie will continue in the coming days

The Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy, Tinne Van der Straeten, have been negotiating for several months with the French group the ten-year extension of the two most recent reactors of the Belgian nuclear fleet in order to guarantee the security of electricity supply to the country. In July, the two parties reached an agreement in principle (letter of intent). The final agreement was expected by the end of the year. So it will be a little late.

“Many advances have been made in recent days, on a significant number of crucial points, which delights both parties. A delay is nevertheless necessary to reach an agreement which fully satisfies both parties,” said a press release.

“The federal government and Engie have therefore decided to extend the ongoing discussions in the coming days. The objective remains to quickly reach an agreement allowing the extension of the life of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors. for 10 years. This objective is shared by both the federal government and by Engie”, he adds.

The government met in a select committee in the morning and gave the negotiators a mandate to continue the discussions.
