The results of the Monthly Tourist Accommodation Survey (EMAT), prepared by the INE, confirmed the estimates of tourism entrepreneurs in the region regarding the decline observed this summer.

According to the EMAT, during January 2024, 42,223 overnight stays were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments in the Ñuble region, which represents a contraction of 8.4% compared to January 2023, when overnight stays totaled 46,075. At the national level, there were ten regions that exhibited negative variations, where Ñuble recorded the sixth deepest drop.

The January figure contrasts with the 29.0% year-on-year increase in overnight stays observed last December, a figure that interrupted seven consecutive months with negative variations, but, in light of the January figures, it did not mark a turning point. inflection, as expected.

Shorter stays

In that sense, the tourism unions highlighted that the complex economic scenario has promoted more austere tourism this summer, where the most obvious example is the reduction in the number of nights per reservation.

Both the president of the Quillón Chamber of Tourism, Andrés Paqué; such as the president of the Cobquecura Chamber of Tourism, Francisco Maldonado; They agreed that overnight stays are for fewer nights, concentrating mainly on weekends.

“There is less money, the reservations now are not like the ones before, now no one books for one or two weeks, but rather they come for three or four days, and that is noticeable,” stressed Paqué, who also mentioned the competition they represent. Argentine destinations (more economical).

For his part, Francisco Maldonado, from Cobquecura, stated that “the tourists are not there for more than three days. The presence of people is more noticeable on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” to which he added that there are also many visitors who visit the coast only for the day. “It is noticeable that there is less money, it was noticed in the restaurants, for example, that, unlike previous summers, they were not full.”

The INE data also confirms this phenomenon, since according to the EMAT for January, the average stay was 2.0 nights, registering a drop of 7.0% compared to the same month in 2023. Likewise, passenger arrivals reached to 21,155, showing a decrease of 1.4% in 12 months.

Occupancy rate

The January EMAT also revealed that the room occupancy rate was 27.6%, presenting an interannual decrease of 5.6 percentage points (in January 2023 it reached 33.2%).

This is the lowest rate for the month of January since records exist (2017), in fact, it had never dropped below 30% in January.

The data corresponds to the occupancy rate in the Valle Las Trancas destination, according to the report provided by the Undersecretariat of Tourism, which reached an average of 24.8% during the week of January 15 to 20, 2024, which represented a contraction of 22.8 percentage points compared to the measurement for the same period in 2023.

Returning to the EMAT, it was also reported that regional income per available room totaled $20,296, a figure that decreased 1.6% in 12 months.

Likewise, the regional average monthly rate (average daily rate of the occupied accommodation unit) was $73,612, a figure that increased 18.5% compared to the same month in 2023.
