Are you Johnny Depp fans, but have you just seen Pirates of the Caribbean and Co. way too often? Then you should check out the gripping and all-too-unknown thriller Against Time, which is now available to stream on WOW.
Anyone who has worked their way through Johnny Depp’s work will quickly realize that the 1990s in particular were damn strong here. Not only was the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star able to celebrate his breakthrough there, films like “Edward Scissorhands”, “Arizona Dream”, “Gilbert Grape”, “Ed Wood”, “Dead Man” or “Donnie Brasco” are there also absolutely timeless and can be looked at once more and once more. A very special thriller from 1995 is somewhat forgotten: “Against the time“.
Haven’t heard of the film yet, but would you like to close your Johnny Depp educational gap? No problem! “Gegen die Zeit” is now available as a subscription to WOW (formerly Sky Ticket). And that really makes sense, because no German Blu-ray of the real-time thriller has been released so far, while the DVD is being traded at sometimes outrageous prices.

This begins a relentless race once morest time for Gene, in which he soon finds out that he can hardly trust anyone. Can he and his daughter somehow escape the nightmare?
Highly exciting and pure 90s!
In Germany, “Gegen die Zeit” hasn’t even been released in cinemas, which is one of the indicators why the real-time thriller still leads a rather shadowy existence in Johnny Depp’s work today. The film deserves much more attention! Director John Badham, who has directed cult films such as “Saturday Night Fever”, “War Games” and “Number 5 Lives!”, gets to the point following a few minutes in “Against the Time” and engages the viewers wonderfully urgent tension scenario with nail-biting guarantee a.
Although “Against the Times” often looks like a TV production from a purely visual point of view, the thriller can score on all other levels. John Badham has an extraordinary sense of creating an incredibly oppressive pressure from the real-time premise and making it clear that every minute is a matter of life and death. There are no breaks, instead the desperation of the protagonist, played excellently by Johnny Depp, grows visibly.
Even more than 25 years following its release, “Against the Times” is still a real gem of the genre. It’s not a masterpiece, but the lack of frills throughout (the credits roll following a little over 80 minutes – what a blessing) creates a rousing pull that you just can’t resist.
