On Friday, November 3rd, the book of history records, among other things:

1903: At the instigation of the USA, Panama declares its independence from Greater Colombia and leases areas to the North Americans for the construction of the Panama Canal. Manuel Amador Guerrero becomes the first president of the new state.
1908: Republican candidate William Howard Taft is elected 27th President of the United States. He thereby replaces Theodore Roosevelt in his office.
1918: Vorarlberg becomes an independent federal state.
1918: The armistice between Austria-Hungary and the Allies is signed in Villa Giusti near Padua. Italian troops occupy Trent and Trieste. 400,000 Austrian soldiers were taken prisoner by Italy without a fight.
1918: In the Eichensälen in Vienna-Favoriten, the Communist Party is founded through the merger of various left-wing groups. The typographer Karl Steinhardt is elected first chairman. The actual initiator of the founding of the KPÖ is the bank official Franz Koritschoner.
1918: In Warsaw, the Polish National Council proclaims a republic.
1918: The November Revolution begins in Germany with the uprising of the sailors in Kiel.
1933: The Hungarian journalist FW Stein, the bookseller Rudolf Weys, the pianist Otto Andreas and the director Martin Magner open the cabaret “Literatur am Naschmarkt” in the Vienna Cafe Dobner. In 1938, shortly before the annexation of Austria, the company dissolved. Some non-Jewish ensemble members then founded the “Wiener Werkel”.
1958: The UNESCO building at Place de Fontenoy with works by Picasso, Miro, Moore and Calder is inaugurated in Paris. The architects are Marcel Breuer, Pier-Luigi Nervi and Bernard Zehrfuss.
1963: Crisis in the Vienna State Opera: The dispute over an Italian prompter leads to a staff strike. The “Boheme” premiere under Herbert von Karajan has to be canceled.
1978: The Caribbean island of Dominica proclaims its independence from Great Britain, and on December 8th Dominica becomes a member of the United Nations.
1983: Civil rights activist and Baptist preacher Pastor Jesse Jackson is the first black American to announce his candidacy for president of the United States.
1988: In the Maldives, a coup once morest President Gayoom fails, resulting in the deaths of at least twelve soldiers.
2003: In Afghanistan, a democratic draft constitution is being presented two years following the US military overthrow of the Taliban regime.
2008: The EU Commission presents its economic forecast: Growth in the Eurozone and the EU will almost come to a standstill next year due to the financial crisis.
2013: A report in the news magazine “Focus” reveals that around 1,500 paintings by masters of classical modernism were discovered and confiscated in the apartment of 80-year-old Munich resident Cornelius Gurlitt – including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc, Max Beckmann or Max Liebermann. As a result, more and more details become known. The confiscation had already taken place in February 2012, and Gurlitt also owns a house in Salzburg. Ultimately, the initially rumored “value of billions” of the art find is being reduced more and more, and at the same time criticism of the authorities is growing. The majority of it is probably legally owned by the old man, but returning possible “looted art” seems extremely difficult under the law.
