Announced Tuesday, the Pixel Watch 3 adds a highly anticipated choice to the lineup, while the Buds Pro 2 earbuds arrive just over two years after the company released the first-generation product.

Until Tuesday’s Made by Google 2024 event, the Pixel Watch only came in one size: 41mm, which is now being joined by the new 45mm. Both versions feature larger displays than the Pixel Watch 2, thanks in part to reduced bezels.

The display is also brighter, going from a peak of 1000 to 2000 nits – a nice improvement for a device that’s designed to be checked out in daylight. The AMOLED display has a density of 320 ppi, with a refresh rate of 60Hz.

The chip remains unchanged from last year’s model. It’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 5100, with a Cortex M33 coprocessor. The battery is also the same size, on the 41mm model at 306mAh, while the 45mm version has a whopping 420mAh. Google claims the same 24 hours of battery life with the always-on display enabled. With battery saver mode, the battery life increases to 36 hours.

In comparison, the Apple Watch does less well with 18 hours of battery life, but the OnePlus Watch 2 promises 100 hours thanks to two chips, alternating between the one for economy mode and the other performance.

Pixel Watch 3: Starting at CA$479 and available September 10.

Attracting athletes

To appeal to the running community, the watch uses a combination of motion detection and machine learning to get a more complete picture of things like cadence, stride length and vertical oscillation.

A new running dashboard brings all this data together in one place.

Fitbit Premium subscription to take advantage of Google AI

The company is still trying to sell to athletes Fitbit Premium subscription at $12.99/month or $104.99/year. This upgrade leverages Google’s artificial intelligence, combined with past runs to create training goals.

The Fitbit app now offers a “Morning Brief” feature. It includes sleep metrics, a “Readiness Score,” weekly goals, and other health-related data. It also includes weather, giving you a better idea of what your morning run will be like.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 Earbuds

As with all the hardware unveiled at Tuesday’s event, Google is putting its generative AI experience — particularly Gemini Live’s conversational capabilities — front and center.

“With the new Gemini Live in your headphones, you can have a real conversation with an AI assistant,” according to Google. It’s like talking to a close confidant.

One thing that neural networks based on language models do extraordinarily well is simulate conversation, so Gemini Live is a logical step in this area.

The arrival of Gemini Live on the Buds coincides with Google making Gemini the default assistant on the new Pixel 9 lineup. It’s powered in part by the earbuds’ Tensor A1 chip, which allows Google to apply its mobile chipmaking expertise to the Pixel Buds lineup for the first time.

Google says the new chip also helps reduce the size of the Buds by 27%, with faster processing speeds and battery life increased to 12 hours on the Buds and 48 hours when combined with the charging case. The Buds Pro 2 also support the feature Find My Device from Google, which lets you locate lost devices on a map or ring them with the charging case if they’re buried under a pile of clothes in your apartment.

The new passive noise reduction system Silent Sealcombined with improvements to active noise reduction capabilities, “cancels up to twice as much noise as before,” according to Google.

Pixel Buds Pro 2: Starting at CA$299 and available September 26.
