Professor Harry Sokol. – Bacteria, yeast, viruses, single-celled organisms without a nucleus… there are a large number of microorganisms in our intestines. Their number is estimated to be 10 trillion, equivalent to the number of human cells! With the help of sophisticated molecular analysis methods, we can better understand all living things and classify them into broad categories. For example, in the bacterial family we find that, quantitatively, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. We also know that microorganisms are not distributed in our digestive systems by accident. They adapt to their environment: in the small intestine there is oxygen, which favors the presence of aerobic bacteria; in the colon there are anaerobic bacteria.
