Railway tracks lifted from the ground at Noto Railway’s Anamizu Station on the 12th, Anamizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture

On the 13th, Tetsuya Nakata (61), president of the third sector “Noto Railway” (Anamizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture), which was affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and has been completely suspended, said in an interview with Kyodo News that he would consider alternative transportation by bus. He announced that he is considering it. “We aim to restore the line as soon as possible,” he said, with a view to resuming service in some sections that suffered little damage, mainly for regular commuters.

There is no prospect of a full reopening. Noto Railway explained that 70% of its passengers commute to work or school. “First of all, we want to quickly create a transportation plan using buses. We want to move forward with the resumption of high school classes,” he said.

On the other hand, roads may be damaged due to the effects of the earthquake, and trains may not be able to operate on time due to traffic jams on detours. There is a fear of secondary disasters due to a series of earthquakes, and he said, “We want to start where we can, but we cannot predict what kind of bus transportation will be best.”

President Nakata is looking to resume service in a portion of the Nanao-Noto-Nakajima (Nanao City, same prefecture) section where the vehicles are being held. The combination of buses and trains is “still hypothetical, but we need to consider it,” he said.
