Recently invited to the microphone of the podcast Kinda Funny Games, Todd Howard, director of Starfield and emblematic figure of Bethesda, revealed many details concerning the future hit of Xbox. And for players enjoying romance, he addressed a few words that may well disappoint them.

It’s probably the most anticipated game of the year now that The Legend of Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom finally came out: Starfield has been turning the heads of fans of rich and immersive adventures ever since the last Direct dedicated to him.
For nearly 45 minutes, the new Bethesda title revealed itself in many aspects, ranging from exploration to ship customization and crafting, through history, planets and even combat. Starfield looks incredibly promising and Todd Howard was able to reveal more to us recently.
Invited to the microphone of the Kinda Funny Games podcast, the director of the game was asked regarding several components of the Starfield experience. he provided many details and even stopped briefly on the romances, an aspect particularly appreciated by fans of RPGs. But his statement may well be quite disappointing.
Eyes full of stars
In Starfield, as in several Bethesda games and more broadly in many Western RPGs, it will be possible to start a romantic relationship with secondary characters. The characters concerned are often companions who assist you throughout your adventure. Depending on the various quests offered and your choices, your relationship with these characters may culminate in a romance.
In Starfield, companions will be part of your crew. It will be possible to recruit them throughout your adventure, take them with you, assign them to outposts… Bethesda promises many interactions with them, including romance.
Except that this component does not concern the entire cast. According to Todd Howard, only four characters – the four main companions – will be involved in the romance (from 25:49 minutes in the video available above). This ultimately represents very few possibilities, especially in view of past standards, as within the saga Mass Effect to name just her.
It is therefore a potential disappointment for players who precisely appreciate a vast field of possibilities and the deepening of the relationships between characters. Still, choosing to limit the possibilities might mean more work in writing those romances. Cyberpunk 2077 account for example just as much (excluding one-night stands), but CD Projekt RED has decided to dig deeper into these romances to make them more memorable. Overall quality rather than quantity. Whether writing these romances in Starfield will be memorable enough remains to be seen. Answer from September 6th!
