“Following statements made by the Attorney General of the Republic (Tarek William Saab) last weekend, we are awaiting a new meeting in which the aspects related to the judicial closure of the case will be discussed, once Edmundo González Urrutia has left the country and is in Spanish territory,” said his lawyer, José Vicente Haro, in an interview with Spanish Television (TVE)..

González requested asylum in Spain, believing that he was suffering political and judicial persecution in Venezuela after the July 28 elections, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, something that is considered a “fraud” by the opposition, which insists on the “victory” of its standard-bearer.

The Consulate of Ecuador in Caracas ceased operations on Saturday, September 14; however, it announced several measures regarding the continuity of consular services for Ecuadorians living in Venezuela.

In this regard, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry published a statement on September 12 in which it reported on the completion of procedures via online or at the embassies located in Colombia and Panama.

“In order to continue providing consular services to Ecuadorian citizens in Venezuela, without the need for them to travel to another country for this purpose, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility established an action plan following the closure of the Ecuadorian consulate in that territory to be implemented from September 14,” confirmed the Ecuadorian entity.

He explained that requests for emergency passports, apostilles and legalizations will be handled starting September 14 through the diplomatic offices located in Bogotá and Panama City “via telematics.”

Opposition leader María Corina Machado and several Venezuelan personalities asked the international community to recognize Edmundo González as the “elected president” of Venezuela at the next General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), on September 28.

Machado posted a video on her social media in which various Venezuelan personalities invite citizens to demonstrate to demand that the international community recognize Edmundo González as “the winner of the presidential elections on July 28.”

They also asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take action against the Venezuelan authorities for the alleged crimes against humanity of which they are accused.

Authorities fear the death toll will rise in the coming hours due to the fire that started when the fuel tank of the tanker truck was punctured when it collided with a truck that had broken down on the road.

6. Belfast will not host Euro 2028

Belfast’s Euro 2028 hosting plan may not go ahead after the British government announced it would not fund the redevelopment of Casement Park, the stadium that was due to host matches during the tournament.

The stadium, located in the capital of Northern Ireland, has been undergoing renovation since 2011, at an estimated cost of 100 billion dollars, but over the years and rising prices have led the government to estimate that more than 5 billion dollars will be needed to carry out the project.

The government also believes that the stadium will probably not be ready in time for the summer of 2028, when the continental tournament will be held.

“UEFA has noted the UK Government’s position regarding Casement Park and will engage with the tournament organisers to discuss the implications for the tournament,” UEFA said in a statement.
