The Provincial Government or DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has not been optimal in processing waste in the city. This is based on the amount of waste produced every day in Jakarta reaching 8000 tons per day but it is disposed of at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST), Bekasi, West Java.
Walhi Jakarta campaigner Muhammad Aminullah said the effectiveness of waste processing might be seen if it might reduce the amount of waste processed in the city of Jakarta.
“It can’t be said to be effective. Waste production is still around 8,000 tons, around 7,000 tons entering the bantargebang. Management can be said to be effective if the waste entering the bantargebang can be reduced,” he said when contacted, Monday (13/5).
Half of Jakarta’s total waste is organic which can be managed in the simplest way. According to Walhi, the Bantargebang TPST functions to process residual waste. He believes that effective waste management in the context of organic management alone can reduce up to 4000 tons per day.
Recently, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has carried out groundbreaking or laying the first stone in the project to build the Jakarta Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta. According to Walhi, the government should have completed a comprehensive environmental impact study.
“RDF is the same as Incinerator, using combustion. Burning waste has the potential to release pollutants and increase emissions,” explained Aminullah.

Previously, the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono together with the Environmental Service carried out a groundbreaking for the construction of the Jakarta Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing facility in Rorotan, North Jakarta, Monday (13/5). Heru claims that this location will later become one of the largest RDF technology waste processing sites in the world.
“The waste processing capacity at this facility is capable of processing 2,500 tons of waste/day, and will produce products in the form of RDF or alternative fuel as much as 875 tons/day. “This facility will be one of the largest in the world,” said Heru.
The RDF Plant was built on 7.87 hectares of land owned by Jakarta. The budget required is through the 2024 APBD amounting to IDR 1.28 trillion. Heru explained that this development is also a way to reduce Jakarta’s waste burden which is always stored at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST), Bekasi, West Java. (Far/Z-7)
