“Not everyone who wins has a visa available”

More than 2,000 Cubans won the diversity visa lottery or the “2025 lottery,” according to official data from the United States Department of State, but they are warned that not everyone who wins has a visa available and they are encouraged to do so.

This August, the Department of State (DOS) announced that 2,348 Cubans were winners of the 2025 visa lottery.

Those selected will be able to begin processing their applications for immigrant visas starting October 1 and will have until September 30, 2025 to enter the United States.

In this regard, attorney Jesús Novo urged, as reported by Miami channel Univisión 23, that they have to “hurry up, because not everyone who wins has a visa available.” So the suggestion is that you gather the necessary documentation as soon as possible and schedule your visa appointment at the United States Embassy.

Did you know that the American Consulate in Havana does grant this type of visa? Luckily, the beneficiaries and winners of the 2025 lottery will not have to travel to a third country to obtain legal entry into the United States. This procedure is carried out from the diplomatic headquarters on Malecón, in the Cuban capital.

Cubans and the 2025 hype: visa interview time

If you are one of the lucky Cubans selected in this year’s “bombo 2025” or visa lottery, you will soon face an immigrant visa interview before a U.S. consulate official.

After the U.S. authorities verify your educational level (12th grade for Cubans or its equivalent in your country of origin) and the two years of work experience in occupations of interest to the United States, it will be time to apply for an immigrant visa and registration as a foreigner. Then, you must send the supporting documents requested to clarify any doubts.

The next step will be the visa interview and the necessary preparation for it. The official page of the Diversity Visa Program to the United States (known as bombo 2025 in Cuba) offers a series of tips that you should follow to the letter if you want to legally establish yourself with all the benefits in an American city next year.
