It travels sublimely in the plush, carpet and polished world of yesterday. You travel all day from Linz because scheduled trains have priority and a longer stop is necessary from time to time. The open carriages allow for casual entertainment, an entertainment program is provided, refreshments and food are served. The second central experience is the charming and diverse landscapes up to Postojna (Adelsberg) and across the Karst down to the Kvarner Bay to Rijeka.
The railway played a key role in making Opatija one of the most sophisticated spa towns on the old continent 150 years ago. In 1873 the Vienna–Trieste southern railway line was extended with a branch line to Rijeka. In 1884, the Southern Railway Company, which was intended to develop tourism alongside rail transport, built the first luxury hotel, the Kvarner, in Opatija. At that time it was a fishing village, still called Abbazia because of the Italian (Venetian) influences. This means – just like the Croatian word Opatija – abbey, because various orders had run monasteries here since the 15th century.
Excursions into the country
Imperial flair awaits the tour participants on a tour and stroll through the restored old town of Rijeka, the European Capital of Culture 2020. The next day we head south to the artist town of Labin. Coal mining stopped in 1989 and the historic city center has been shining ever since. Noble baroque houses stretch up the streets. The terraces offer a view of the sea and the picturesque alleys. We stop off at a typical local tavern (Heuriger style), where you can fortify yourself with a traditional snack before continuing on to Hum, which, with its 53 inhabitants, is making a name for itself as the smallest town in the world.
If you want, you can spend the last day on the Opatija Riviera or explore the island of Krk or the port cities of Pula and Rovinj on one of the two optional day trips before starting your return journey the next day.
