Nosocomial Infections in France: Risks and Best Practices in Guadeloupe

Hospital-acquired infections are on the rise in France. One in 18 patients is affected. This is the result of a national survey conducted in 2022 by Public Health France. This is a snapshot of a given day in 1,155 healthcare establishments. However, in Guadeloupe, the prevalence of infected patients is below the national average, which would illustrate the quality of care in the archipelago.

The investigation by Public Health France to which 151,676 patients participated, reveals a rebound of nearly 15% in cases of nosocomial infections contracted in a health establishment in France, partly due to Covid. This prevalence of infected patients increased between 2017 and 2022 (+14.7%). Nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) infections accounted for half of this increase.

Nosocomial diseases, infections contracted during a stay in a health establishment. They can be directly linked to care or occur during hospitalization, even outside of any medical act.

Zero risk does not exist, explains Bruno Jarrige, an anesthetist and resuscitator.

During an operation, a urinary catheterization, an infusion, the patient will get an infection at the level of his catheter, at the level of his bladder or at the level of his operative wound. The risk is never equal to zero, it is around 5%. In exchange for taking this risk, we have an expected benefit for the patient which is much higher.

During this study conducted between May 15 and May 30, 2022, the prevalence of infected patients in Guadeloupe was 3.65%. A figure below the national average.
For Bruno Jarrige, this is an illustration of the good practices of caregivers, despite the difficulties of the Guadeloupe University Hospital.

At the Guadeloupe University Hospital, the nosocomial risk is 5 to 6%, which would correspond to the usual rates in modern countries.

The national survey on the prevalence of nosocomial infections and anti-infective treatments in healthcare establishments (ENP), conducted in France every five years since 1990.
