No time? blue News summarizes for you

The Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis five years ago. The 49-year-old hardly shows her condition in public. This not only impresses her compatriots, but also her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

Strong medication, cancellations at short notice, regular breaks – and still a full schedule: everyday life always presents the Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit with great challenges.

In 2018, the 49-year-old was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. With this disease, excess connective tissue forms in the lungs – between the alveoli and around the blood vessels. These changes affect gas exchange and circulation in the lungs.

The chronic illness means that Mette-Marit needs time off once more and once more. She recently had to cancel a number of dates, including a trip to northern Norway and a tour of Sweden.

Crown Prince Haakon: “It’s a serious diagnosis”

In public, the crown princess hardly shows her suffering. This not only impresses the Norwegians, but especially her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

On the occasion of his 50th birthday, the son of King Harald and Queen Sonja spoke to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. When asked regarding his wife’s lung disease, he says: “It’s a serious diagnosis and a chronic disease.”

His wife goes “different from time to time”. And further: “What is difficult one day can be good once more the next day.” Mette-Marit has to take strong medication regularly, which would make her very tired.

Haakon is impressed by Mette-Marit

At the end of the conversation with “Aftenposten”, the corn prince even gets a bit emotional. He admires his wife for her strength and courage and looks up to her. “She impressed me.”

The situation is not easy for the Norwegian heir to the throne because his father Harald’s health is not the best.

The monarch therefore currently only keeps appointments behind the castle walls. In concrete terms, this means that Haakon has to step in for his father more and more often.

In addition, in the next few years, the burden of the office will increasingly hang on the crown prince, since daughter Ingrid Alexandra is only 19 years old.
