Summary

Canada had lost only once in 24 meetings once morest Norway in its history. Monday morning’s duel at the World Hockey Championship should have given Canada a fifth victory in the tournament, but Norway surprised the Canadians with a 3-2 shootout win.

Isak Hansen, Sondre Olden, Mathias Trettenes and Thomas Olsen played heroes for the Norwegians, all scoring from the penalty shootout to give the Scandinavian side victory.

It was Norway’s first win at the tournament since winning in 2000.

Canada thus missed a golden opportunity to climb to second place in Group B. Canada is tied for third in the group with Latvia following six games, behind Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Andreas Martinsen and Olden scored for Norway in regulation time, while Milan Lucic and Lawson Crouse found the back of the net in Canada’s losing cause. In the shootout, only Cody Glass and Tyler Toffoli shone the light for Canada.

Things got off to a bad start for Canada, which saw the Norwegians take a 2-0 lead following just over a period of play.

The Maple Leaf was first surprised in the middle of the first period, when former Montreal Canadiens forward Martinsen was forgotten at the top of the slot. Martinsen accepted a pass from Ken Andre Olimb, following a Canadian turnover, to open the scoring with a brisk wrist shot.

Then, Norway quickly returned to the charge in the first moments of the middle period. Olden let off a wrist shot near the boards that Joel Hofer missed and Norway doubled their lead 1:52 into the game.

Canada finally gave a sign of life just over six minutes later, halfway through the second period. Forward Milan Lucic took advantage of the heavy traffic in front of Jonas Arntzen’s net to score with a good wrist shot and put Canada within a goal of Norway.

With less than three minutes to play in the second period, forward Adam Fantilli delivered a hard-hitting check to Christian Kaasastul in the corner of the rink. After a video review, the referees awarded a five-minute major penalty to Fantilli, who was ejected from the game. The Canadian penalty kill, however, did a good job and did not concede a goal.

Canada had a golden chance to tie the game late, but Jack Quinn hit the post and then Arntzen closed the door to hold Norway’s lead.

However, there was a bit of magic in the air in Riga. With 12 seconds left, Michael Carcone picked up a puck in the corner following the face-off, then put it in front of the net to Lawson Crouse, who tied the game to send everyone into overtime.

Four of the Norwegians’ five shooters got the better of Hofer in the shootout. Hoffer stopped 22 of 24 shots aimed at him in the loss, while his opposite number Arntzen stopped 31 shots.

Canada will finish the group stage once morest Czech Republic on Tuesday, while Norway will face Slovakia.
