Norway does not meet the EU’s deadline for introducing the renewables directive

It was in March that the EU’s energy commissioner Kadri Simson set August 13 as the deadline for introducing the EU’s renewables directive in Norway, writes The class struggle.

If the directive was not introduced by then, the EU threatened “all necessary steps that may have to be taken to preserve the integrity of our common internal market”, according to the newspaper.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) has previously said that Norway will not be pressured to comply with the deadline, while Energy Minister Terje Aasland (AP) has said that Norway has stepped up the processing of the directive.

The negotiations on the EU’s fourth energy market package, also called the Clean Energy Package, have wavered back and forth for years.

Høyre’s Mathilde Tybring-Gjedde believes that the reason that Norway has still not dealt with the directive is the Center Party’s opposition to the EU. She fears that Norway will have a worse relationship with Brussels as a result.

– It damages Norwegian business and competitiveness, she tells the newspaper.

Rødt leader and EU opponent Marie Sneve Martinussen is of the opposite opinion.

– We are not responsible for a higher power, says Martinussen, and believes that deadlines from EU commissioners are not part of the EEA agreement.
