Four people, including at least one foreign tourist, were killed by three avalanches in the far north of Norway on Friday, local police said.
Five members of a group of foreign tourists were hit by an avalanche near Kavringtinden, a peak in the far north of the country, and “one died”, said during a press conference Morten Pettersen, of the Troms Police.
“Five people of foreign origin were on an outing in the area. We can confirm that one person is deceased,” said Morten Pettersen. Two other members of the group were injured, he said. The police are working to identify the foreign tourist, he added. Dan-Havard Johnsen, mayor of Lyngen, said the group came from Italy but the nationality of the deceased tourist was unknown.
A house and a barn washed away in the sea
Shortly following, police learned that another avalanche had swept away a house and a barn on Reinoya Island, killing two people. There were also 140 goats in the barn at the time of the disaster.
In the evening, the police announced in a press release that a fourth person had been killed by another avalanche, in the Nordreisa region. “This person belonged to a group of foreign travelers. Another member of the group spotted (the victim) and alerted the emergency services,” the police said, without specifying a nationality.
