Northern Panhandle Teenagers Earn Top Honors in West Virginia Elks Association Teenager of the Year Contest

A pair of Northern Panhandle teenagers recently earned honors from the West Virginia Elks Association in its annual Teenager of the Year contest.

Wheeling Central Catholic graduate Chaz Frizzell won first place for the entire state of West Virginia in the boys competition, while John Marshall graduate Victoria Kidney won first place for West Virginia’s Northern District.

Frizzell, a Glen Dale native, won a $1,500 scholarship from the West Virginia Elks Association in his competition. Now a freshman at the University of Notre Dame, Frizzell graduated CCHS as its 2023 valedictorian. He also was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies National Honor Society and the Math Tutor Board.

He also was a four-year letterman and co-captain of the cross country team, a four-year letterman and captain of the swim team and a captain and letter winner of the newly formed robotics team.

Kidney, also a Glen Dale native, earned a $250 scholarship from the West Virginia Elks Association for her win. Now a freshman at West Virginia University, Kidney was president of the Leo Club at JMHS and a member of the Student Council and Student Advisory Board. She captained the varsity swimming team, winning two state titles and three state runner-up trophies during her high school career. She now swims for the Mountaineers.
