We should be proud of that.
But we must also demand our rights and ask for help when we are not prioritized in important areas, and medical coverage is an example of this.
Because it is quite obvious that North Jutland is facing an acute shortage of doctors – especially in Thy and Vendsyssel, where coverage is threatened.
Even so, we were passed over in the government’s latest rural development plan, where 20 extra places at the medical school were instead sent to Esbjerg.
A choice that is problematic for several reasons.
Firstly, Aalborg University’s own figures show that 80 per cent of medical students stay in the region in which they are trained.
Region North Jutland, together with Region Zealand, has the country’s worst medical coverage. If Aalborg got more places at the medical school, it would therefore mean more doctors here, where the need is greatest.
The fact that Aalborg University also has the capacity to expand enrollment by 50 places without compromising on quality only underlines the need for action.
The government’s decision to award Esbjerg the extra seats may seem logical in a national context, but in this case North Jutland should be prioritized.
Not only for the sake of the current doctor shortage, but also to future-proof the health system in the region, because it is a national political responsibility to provide a uniform health service throughout the country.
The shortage of doctors in North Jutland is a threat that requires concrete solutions, and an increased number of places at the medical school in Aalborg would be a step in the right direction.
Christina Egelund, minister of education and research, has herself mentioned that Aalborg University supplies skilled doctors and that she is open to future expansion.
In her latest answer to Nordjutland, she explains that she is in “good dialogue” with Nordjylland about the places. An answer that unfortunately does not oblige.
Because what good is a “good dialogue” worth if the concrete actions do not occur?
North Jutland cannot wait much longer – we deserve better medical coverage, and that could appropriately start with more places at the medical school in Aalborg.
This is a leader. It was written by a member of our board of directors and expresses Nordjutske’s position.
