Northern Iraq: Five Turkish soldiers dead after conflict with PKK

According to the Defense Ministry, five Turkish soldiers have been killed in clashes with fighters from the banned Kurdish Workers’ Party PKK in northern Iraq. The soldiers died following the PKK “interfering fire,” the ministry said in Ankara late Wednesday evening. The terrorist organization has its headquarters in the northern Iraqi Kandil Mountains. A Turkish military offensive once morest the PKK in northern Iraq has been underway since April 2022.

The PKK and the Turkish government have been fighting each other for decades. At least 40,000 people have died so far. In July 2015, the conflict flared up once more following a ceasefire that lasted more than two years. Ankara also regularly takes action once morest the PKK in south-eastern Turkey, which in turn often carries out attacks.
