BEIJING (AP) — Heavy snow covered parts of northeastern China on Monday, closing schools and paralyzing transportation in the first major blizzard of the season.

In the northeastern city of Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, highways were closed and flights were cancelled, according to Chinese state television CCTV. Elementary and middle schools also canceled classes on Monday.

Video footage showed delivery trucks blocked and stuck together in a line that stretched a kilometer (0.6 mile) outside the city.

The National Weather Center said Monday that the snowfall will likely “break all-time records” for that time of year. Heavy snowfall was expected to continue in parts of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces, where snowfall would reach 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) in some places.

In the city of Chaoyang, in neighboring Liaoning province, and in Chifeng, in Inner Mongolia, kindergartens and primary schools were also closed.

Chinese authorities issued an orange alert from Monday morning until Tuesday, the second highest on a scale of four.
