A man who had holed up since Wednesday morning in a north Salem home with four children peacefully exited the residence, got on the ground and was arrested by police.
“The police have gone above and beyond,” said a relative of the man who came out of the house at 5:24 p.m., regarding a minute following the last of four children and a dog walked out the front door.
Salem officers initially responded to a request for assistance from Keizer Police at 6:40 a.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance, said Salem Police spokesperson Angela Hedrick.
Several roads are closed in north Salem as police negotiate with a man
Salem Police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said several roads are closed as a tactical team negotiates with the man.
Keizer Police said in a press release that officers arrived at a north Keizer residence where a woman reported she and her boyfriend had been in an argument and that he strangled and then assaulted her. He had left by the time the officers arrived, and returned to his Salem home where officers attempted to contact him, the release said.
Hedrick said the man refused to leave the north Salem residence, Hedrick said.
“Out of an abundance of caution, a small contingent of tactical officers was deployed for the service of a warrant on the home,” she said.
Cherry Avenue NE was closed between Locust and Pine streets and Hickory Street was closed at Myrtle Avenue NE as police negotiated with the man.
