- The Ministry of the Interior of that country detailed that a VPN or a BotNet network could have been used
The Ministry of Interior of North Macedonia has reacted to statements made by the government of Nicolás Maduro regarding an alleged cyber attack against the data transmission system of the National Electoral Council (CNE) during the presidential elections of July 28.
The agency said it has not received any requests from Venezuelan authorities to carry out checks on the alleged denial of service (DDoS) attack on the electoral system.
“The Ministry of the Interior informs the public that the Department of Cybercrime is following the evolution of the alleged accusations against Macedonian citizens and we also declare that so far, the Venezuelan authorities have not sent requests or information on the above to carry out further checks on our part,” the agency said in a statement. statement.
North Macedonia’s Minister for Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski said they are closely following the process and will ensure that “no one is charged in the country without adequate evidence.”
“This is a socialist regime that for years has often leaked information not supported by evidence and blamed interested parties and states that bear no responsibility in such cases,” he stressed.
Attack could have been carried out with VPN or a BotNet network
The Interior Ministry said that although a North Macedonian IP address may have appeared in the alleged attack, that does not mean it originally came from that country.
In the document, they explained that, based on previous experience, they can point out that there is a high probability that a VPN was used for the alleged attack or that the person is part of a larger BotNet network.
(These) originate from so-called infected zombie computers, which have been compromised by hackers using computer viruses or malware and can perform assigned tasks controlled remotely by individuals or a group of potential hackers,” he said.
The agency said the most common victims of such zombie computers are people who do not know that their computer systems are infected with a malware. software malicious and without your knowledge and consent, DDoS attacks are carried out, which represent a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal Internet traffic of a certain location, server, service or network.
Statements from the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office
Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced on July 29 the opening of an investigation into an alleged plan by people linked to the opposition to tamper with the results of the elections held on Sunday, July 28.
In a press conference, Saab said that the electoral system suffered an “attack from North Macedonia” yesterday, the intention of which was to manipulate the data that was being received on the results of the voting in the more than 15 thousand authorized centers.
“They wanted to alter the voting records of the automated system,” he said. In addition, the prosecutor held opposition leader María Corina Machado responsible for these plans, as well as former deputy Lester Toledo and former mayor Leopoldo López, both exiled opposition members of the Voluntad Popular party.
“(It is) an attack that slowed down the sending of votes for counting,” he added.
Reactions
On July 30, former Venezuelan congressman Lester Toledo described the accusations against him as “nonsense.”
“They are delusional, they are desperate,” Toledo said during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Miami City Hall in southern Florida (United States), where he rejected the “false accusations.”
Toledo pointed out that the investigation announced by the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office is nothing more than an attempt to “justify the unjustifiable.”
In electoral terms, what happened on Sunday is an unprecedented result in our recent history. We are talking about almost 40 percentage points of difference between one political option and another. That is impossible to hide,” Toledo emphasized.
The opposition leader stressed that candidate Edmundo González Urrutia won by a wide margin over the current Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, whom the CNE announced as the winner of the elections.
