North Korea’s missile launches, South Korea, the US, and Japan discuss countermeasures against North Korean nuclear weapons

    Shortly following North Korea’s launch of a short-range ballistic missile, the chief representatives of North Korea, the United States, Japan, and South Korea condemned North Korea and discussed countermeasures.

    After meeting with U.S. special representative for North Korea Sung Kim on the morning of the 5th, Kim Gun, head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Relations Headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a three-way consultation by telephone with Japan’s chief representative Funakoshi Takehiro, director of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the issue of North Korea’s ballistic missile launch. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said they had discussed it.

    They added that they strongly condemned North Korea’s ballistic missile launch, pointing out that it clearly violated a number of UN Security Council resolutions and that it was a provocation that escalated tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in the region.

    It also said that the North Koreans expressed deep regret for continuing missile development while suffering from the spread of COVID-19.

    He also explained that he urged North Korea to stop any further escalation of tension and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
