North Korea’s Kim Jong-un has Meitli and women renamed

In largely isolated North Korea, there are a variety of restrictions on citizens. Now ruler Kim Jong-un has obtained another ban – for his daughter’s name. She should remain the only one named Ju-ae.

That’s why women and girls who already have that name have to change their name. “Yesterday, the Jeongju City Security Ministry subpoenaed women registered with the Residents’ Registration Office under the name Ju-ae to change their names.”

This was told by two anonymous sources to radio station Free Asia. The name change should be completed “within a week”.

North Koreans have previously been asked not to use the names of those in power and their families. For example, the name Kim Jong-un was banned in 2014.

Ten-year-old Ju-ae is traded as her father’s successor. So far she has been present at two public appearances. Just recently, the dictator showed his daughter at a military parade at an undisclosed location in North Korea.

Ju-ae assisted in a fire test of a Hwasongpho-17 missile alongside her father.
