According to a US national security adviser, the US government is committed to identifying North Korean hackers and tracking stolen digital assets.
An unnamed White House official said North Korea financed regarding half of its missile tests through cyber attacks and stolen cryptocurrency. The official’s point of view is probably close to reality, because a Chainalysis according to a recently published report, North Korean hackers stole $1.7 billion worth of crypto in 2022 alone. The country’s most notorious hacking group, the Lazarus Group, is behind a number of incidents, arguably the most famous of which was the attack on the Ronin Network, in which $625 million was stolen.
The communist country recently tested its most powerful ballistic missile to date
North Korea has become a military power in recent years and is one of the few countries in the world that has nuclear weapons.
After a White House official disclosed that the regime may have financed half of its missile tests with crypto, Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, said the Biden administration is spending a lot of time understanding that “a country like North Korea, how can you be so damn creative regarding this.”
Neuberger also added that US intelligence agencies are working to identify hackers and track stolen digital devices.
Meanwhile, North Korea disclosed a month ago that tested it the “most powerful” ballistic missile to date. Experts have warned that the new weapon is much faster than the previous ones and would leave a greater degree of destruction in its wake. Kim Jong-un, who was present throughout the missile test, said the test would cause rival countries to “suffer from extreme fear and anxiety.”
