South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the east coast, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In turn, the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the launch in a tweet on Twitter. “North Korea launched what is believed to be a ballistic missile. More information later,” he said.
This is the seventh missile launched by the communist state in two weeks.
The missile appears to have fallen into the sea outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, according to the Japanese government.
The Japanese Coast Guard said they had not yet received reports of damage to Japanese ships, according to the national channel, NHK.
On Saturday, Pyongyang defended its latest series of missile tests. “The missile test by the DPRK is a regular and planned self-defense measure,” the North’s civil aviation agency said, in a statement carried by the official news agency.
She added that the goal of this experiment is “to defend the security of the country and regional peace once morest direct military threats.”
This statement was published following the International Civil Aviation Organization, which holds its annual meeting in Montreal on Friday, condemned the ballistic tests conducted by Pyongyang in recent months, stressing that they pose a threat to civil aviation.
