North Korea accuses the International Atomic Energy Agency of double standards

North Korea said on Sunday that the International Atomic Energy Agency’s support for Japan’s plan to drain water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant was “unfair” and showed “severe double standards”.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has approved Japan’s plan to drain water into the ocean following being treated for radiation from the Fukushima plant, which was destroyed by the tsunami.

The agency said Japan’s plans were in line with international safety standards and would have “minimum radioactive impact on people and the environment”.

Hundreds demonstrated in the South Korean capital Saturday, calling on Japan to cancel its plans.

Japan’s fishing unions opposed the plan, saying it would hit the reputational quest following some countries banned Japanese food products following the 2011 disaster.

Japan says the water has been purified and most of the radioactive elements have been removed, with the exception of tritium, an isotope of hydrogen that is difficult to separate from water. The treated water will be diluted to levels well below internationally approved tritium levels before being discharged into the Pacific Ocean.

China said on Tuesday that Japan’s comparison of tritium levels in treated water and waste water was “completely confusing concepts and misleading public opinion”.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “If the Japanese side insists on going its own way, it must bear all the consequences.”
