North Korea has decided to abolish government agencies responsible for cooperation and reunification with South Korea. “The reunification of Korea can never be achieved with the Republic of Korea,” a text passed by the North Korean parliament said, using South Korea’s official name, state news agency KCNA reported on Tuesday. The two states are in an “acute confrontation”.

A few weeks ago, ruler Kim Jong-un declared that it would be a “mistake” to continue pursuing reconciliation with South Korea. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly in the past year. Seoul suspended a 2018 agreement to ease tensions following Pyongyang sent a spy satellite into space. Kim recently described South Korea as the “main enemy.”

In their respective constitutions, South and North Korea claim sovereignty over the entire peninsula. So far, the few diplomatic ties have been between Seoul’s Unification Ministry and Pyongyang’s Peaceful Reunification Committee. The latter is one of the authorities that is now to be abolished.
