The spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, announced Tuesday March 12, during his daily press briefing, that the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) reinforced its positions in the locality of Kanyabayonga, Lubero territory, in the province of North Kivu, to deter any further action by the M23 rebels.
Alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), underlined Stéphane Dujarric, UN peacekeepers continue to defend the locality of Rwindi in the territory of Rutshuru.
“Our Peacekeeping Mission (MONUSCO) has reinforced its positions in the Kanyabayonga region, located in Lubero territory, where more than 76,000 civilians have fled in recent days. As we have reported, peacekeepers have established several humanitarian corridors in the region to ensure the safe movement of civilians and support the delivery of humanitarian assistance,” said Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson.
At the same time, he reassured that, as part of Operation Springbok, the Blue Helmets also continue to maintain positions on key roads leading to the main towns of Sake and Goma, to prevent the advance of the M23.
The UN noted, however, that violent clashes between the M23 and the Congolese army in Kibirizi, Kibingu and Kirima, southwest of Rwindi, in North Kivu, triggered new population displacements.
In this part of Congolese territory, the humanitarian situation remains dramatic and complex. The head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Ramesh Rajasingham, arrived in Goma on Tuesday, where he met with provincial authorities.
Ramesh Rajasingham will also interact with humanitarian actors and civil society organizations involved in the humanitarian response.
