North Kivu: faced with the ordeal of the M23 war displaced, the provincial government takes a first action while awaiting the intervention of other partners

The humanitarian situation of those displaced by the war of aggression in the DRC by Rwanda, under cover of the M23, is becoming more and more worrying. Sources already speak of several cases of diseases, including cholera following the promiscuity reported in the old and new camps that are created in and around the city of Goma. The displaced people have no water, let alone food. There is also the problem of security, even within the camps for displaced people. The military governor of North Kivu, who carried out an inspection visit on Wednesday to various displaced people’s sites, decided on a series of measures, including the disbursement, by the province, of more or less 25 million CF (nearly 10 000 USD) in order to meet the most urgent needs of these displaced people.

These displaced people, both new and old, are crying out for famine. They have no water, let alone access to quality health care. Women and children run enormous risks, which even lead to cases of drowning, when they go to get water from Lake Kivu.

“We are suffering a lot because of having fled the war. But here where we are, there is no peace either. It crackles every day within the camp. The children are lost. And when we make a little movement, the soldiers bother us. There are even some of us who are raped,” testifies a displaced woman met at the Lushagala camp.

“There is no food. There is no water. Cases of children drowning in search of water have been reported at the lake. Please help us. We need peace to return home. It’s been two months since we received a food ration from the WFP. Regarding illnesses, just go to the hospital and you will see that cholera is raging. Please bring us medicine,” pleads this other displaced person encountered at the Bulengo camp.

It is in this context that the military governor of North Kivu, Major General Peter Chirimwami, carried out an inspection visit on Wednesday, notably to the Lushagala, Nzulo, Bulengo and Mugunga camps. After having felt the reality on the ground, the provincial authority ordered the urgent disbursement of 25 million CF to meet the urgent needs felt by these displaced people, pending the definitive resolution of the crisis.

“By taking stock of the situation, it was also to give them assurances that the Head of State is making a lot of efforts so that the displaced can return, as soon as possible, to their communities. “origin”, reassured Major General Peter Chirimwami, interim military governor of North Kivu.

On the ground, a relative calm is observed, following the resumption of sporadic fighting reported since the beginning of the week in the Kibumba-Buhumba areas, in the territory of Nyiragongo as well as Sake-Shasha-Bweremana, in the territory of Masisi.
