North Jutland police officers do not only carry pistols, batons and handcuffs when they drive around in patrol cars.
From now on, some of the officers will also carry teddy bears. Small, home-knitted teddy bears.
The idea comes from the officer Astrid, writes North Jutland Police on Facebook.
Lollipop as consolation
“I came up with the idea for the little teddy bear pocket friends because I was at a traffic accident in December where a child was involved. I have previously been to cases with children, and therefore in this situation I had a lollipop in my pocket. When I came into the ambulance, where the mother was sitting with her son, I might see that she was very shaken and that it made the boy very uneasy. I therefore sat down at eye level with the boy and asked him if he liked lollipops. He might he at least, and the mother relaxed when she saw that her son was relaxing and preoccupied with his lollipop,” says Astrid in the Facebook post.
Teddy bears as tools
The experience inspired the officer to procure small, home-knitted teddy bears. Comforters.
Astrid made knitting friends and confessed to knitting the teddy bears from scraps of yarn. Now the first teddy bears are ready for use – they will be distributed in patrol cars in North Jutland’s Police District.
“I hope that the teddy bear pocket friends can provide reassurance and diversion in situations where children need it – at the same time that the children experience that the police are there for them and look following them. The teddy bears can be a tool for us, which can help create security and calm down in difficult situations. They can make children happy, and it can also help stressed parents who are not even at that moment able to give their children security,” Astrid says in the Facebook post from North Jutland Police.
