WASHINGTON – The governor of North Dakota, Republican Doug Burgum, presented himself this Wednesday as a candidate for the nomination of his party for the 2024 presidential elections.
Burgum officially launched his candidacy at an event in Fargoin that state, shortly following filing the documents with the Federal Election Commission.
In an opinion article, published in the last few hours in The Wall Street Journal, Burgum anticipated that the economy will be his main priority.
“The economy must be our top priority. We must put inflation under control, cut taxes, lower gas prices and lower the cost of living,” Burgum said in the text.
He also advocated “reconstructing” the Armed Forces and restore the US position of strength to win the “cold war” with China.
At his rally on Wednesday, Burgum spoke of the economy and noted that the world is changing rapidly: “How we respond will define our future,” he warned.
“Technology is changing every job, every company, every industry… And this change will be faster than ever. We need new leadership for a changing economy, we need a leader who understands the real work Americans do every day,” he said.
Relatively unknown nationally, Burgum has implemented conservative policies in his state: recently has signed legislation banning abortion following the sixth week of gestation, without exceptions for rape and incest, and preventing transgender women and girls from participating in sports competitions.
Still, he vetoed a law that would have prevented teachers from calling trans students whatever pronouns they like.
On the other hand, it has established Set a goal for your state to be “carbon neutral” by 2030.
In the past, Burgum worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, and later founded Great Plains Software, a technology company that was later acquired by Microsoft for $1.1 billion and became Senior Vice President of Microsoft Business Solutions Group, the company that emerged from the merger.
His story might be an example of the American dream, since when he was studying at the University of Dakota, Burgum started a chimney sweep service in Fargowith a friend’s van, and caught the attention of the local press, which published stories regarding the young man, recalls The New York Times on Wednesday.
Burgum attached those newspaper clippings to his applications to Stanford Business School.
During his speech this Wednesday, Governor He mentioned that past as an entrepreneur of which he feels proud..
Burgum is the second governor to run for the Republican nomination following Florida’s, Ron DeSantisand joins a large group of conservatives who have taken a step forward.
This Wednesday, former Vice President Mike Pence (2017-2021) will also officially launch his campaign in Iowa with a rally.
