Airline boardings in August increased from the previous year at all eight commercial service airports in North Dakota.

The statewide total of 95,416 passengers at the airports in Bismarck, Minot, Fargo, Grand Forks, Dickinson, Williston, Jamestown and Devils Lake was up 12% from August 2022, according to the state Aeronautics Commission.

Bismarck was up 6.1%, Dickinson 1.1% and Williston 8.3%. The increase at Hector International in Fargo — the state’s largest airport — was 13.4%. Grand Forks had a rise of 65.2%, which the commission said was due to a major runway intersection reconstruction project in August 2022 that resulted in 12 consecutive days with no passenger air service at that airport.

The Fargo and Devils Lake airports set passenger records for the month, at 43,871 and 681, respectively. Both of the cities’ previous August records came in 2019, before the start of the coronavirus pandemic that sent passenger numbers in the state plummeting to historic lows in 2020.

The Devils Lake and Fargo airports were the only ones that saw passenger increases in August from four years ago. Bismarck had a drop of 15.9% from August 2019, Dickinson was down 8.4% and Williston declined 13.9%.

Year-to-date boardings statewide stand at 744,826, up 10.8% from the same time frame in 2022. Bismarck is up 4.8%, Dickinson is up 12.9% and Williston is 24.1% higher.

“North Dakota’s air travel demand during the summer months has remained strong, and the average aircraft load factor for the month of August was estimated at approximately 83%,” the commission said in a statement. “Flight departures continue to show a high level of reliability, with cancellation rates for flights departing from North Dakota at well below 1%.”

Delta Air Lines had the largest North Dakota market share in August, of 44%, followed by United with 28% and Allegiant with 15%. American had 11% and Frontier 2%.
