A North Carolina man is accused of hiring someone to murder the man who killed his mother in a hit-and-run when he was a teenager.

Rhett Barlow’s mother, Michelle Barlow, was killed in 2016 when a dump truck slammed into the back of her minivan and crushed her vehicle between the truck and a nearby tractor-trailer.

During Michelle’s funeral, her widower made a point to “forgive” dump truck driver Donald Caulder Jr, WSAZ reported.

Caulder pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and was sentenced to 12 months of probation. He violated probation once, but otherwise had a clean criminal record following the crash, according to WTVD.

Now serving in the National Guard, Barlow, 22, allegedly took several steps to target Caulder – including requesting a transfer to a post that put him in “very close proximity to the intended victim,” according to the prosecutors.

Prosecutors further alleged that Barlow tried to hire a man to kill Caulder in November and then purchased two firearms on the same day. The firearms were reportedly intended for the killer’s use.

The man Barlow is accused of hiring will not face any criminal charges because he turned the suspect in to the police, according to WSAZ.

Barlow is currently being held on $1 million bond and will be required to undergo a mental health evaluation.
