A New Hanover County businessman faces felony tax charges following the was arrested by the North Carolina Department of Revenue agents.

Marteke Latwuan Franks, 48, of Sneads Ferry was arrested Feb. 15 on five counts of embezzlement of state property, a news release from the Revenue Department says.

Indictments allege that Franks, the sole member of Fuwangz LLC, aided and abetted the business to embezzle, misapply, and convert to its own use $79,894.22 in state and county sales tax between May 1, 2016, and Sept. 30, 2020.  Franks was listed as the responsible person for the restaurant and had a duty to collect and remit the tax money to the Revenue Department.

Franks appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a $25,000 secured bond, the release says. He was not listed as a prisoner at the jail Wednesday followingnoon.

The charges once morest Franks resulted from an investigation by special agents with the department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
