(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Seong-jin = Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to meet during Ramadan (Islamic holy month of fasting), AFP reported on the 27th (local time), citing Saudi Arabia’s official SPA news agency.

SPA said Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan had a second phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahian in less than a week. In the phone call, the two foreign ministers discussed several issues of common interest in light of the agreement to normalize relations that was signed through Chinese mediation on the 10th.

“The two foreign ministers have agreed to hold bilateral talks during Ramadan,” the SPA added. This year, Ramadan ends in the third week of April.

Saudi officials described the meeting as a follow-up to restoring diplomatic ties that were severed seven years ago. Saudi Arabia broke off ties in 2016 following Iranian protesters attacked Saudi diplomatic missions over the execution of a Shia cleric.

According to the agreement, Iran, which is predominantly Shia Muslim, and Saudi Arabia, the Sunni suzerain, are expected to reopen their embassies within two months and implement security and economic cooperation agreements signed 20 years ago.

An Iranian official said on the 19th that Iranian President Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi had received a request for a visit from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz. Saudi authorities have yet to officially confirm this.

A détente between Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer, and Iran, which is in conflict with the West over nuclear issues, has the potential to transform relations in the Middle East, which has been a turbulent scene for decades, AFP reported.
