Normality and intense cold mark the election day of the Finnish presidential elections

Helsinki, February 11 (EFE).- The second round of the presidential elections in Finland takes place this Sunday with absolute normality and under intense cold, with temperatures ranging between -10 and -25 degrees Celsius throughout the country, when Half a day has already been reached.

A total of 4.5 million Finns are called to the polls between 09:00 and 20:00 (07:00 and 18:00 GMT) to elect their next president, although 1.95 million voters, equivalent to 43% of the census, have already exercised their right to vote in advance.

The counting of early votes has already begun and will be made public immediately following the closing of the schools, when the ballots issued this Sunday will begin to be counted.

Analysts estimate that turnout might be higher than that recorded in the first round, when 75% of Finns living in the Nordic country voted and only 16.1% of those residing abroad.

The most recent polls predict the victory of the conservative candidate, Alexander Stubb, once morest the environmentalist Pekka Haavisto, by a margin that ranges between six and eight points.

However, the lead of the conservative candidate has been significantly reduced as the election date approached compared to the 14 points he had just ten days ago.

Stubb and Haavisto entered the second round of the presidential elections following beating the other seven candidates in the first vote held two weeks ago, in which they obtained 27.2% and 25.8% of the votes, respectively.

Stubb belongs to the conservative Kokoomus party, from which the current prime minister, Petteri Orpo, and the outgoing president, Sauli Niinistö, who has exhausted his two six-year terms, also come from.

Stubb has been head of Government and minister on three occasions, although he had been away from Finnish politics for almost seven years, during which time he served as vice president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and university professor.

Haavisto, a historic leader and founding member of the Los Greens party, was foreign minister in the previous legislature, period in which Finland joined NATO in record time, and is contesting a presidential election for the third consecutive time.
